FAA proposes replacing mechanic inspection authorization with a non-expiring rating

The Federal Aviation Administration has proposed changing how it handles Inspection Authorizations for aircraft mechanics. Currently, mechanics who hold an Airframe and Powerplant certificate can get an IA, which lets them sign off on major repairs. Under the new proposal, this would become an Inspection Rating that does not expire.
Why it matters: This is mostly an administrative update aimed at cutting red tape. By removing the biennial renewal process, the FAA expects to save millions of dollars over ten years in processing time and forms. Mechanics will also save on the time and cost associated with renewing their current authorizations. The safety standards for what mechanics can do remain largely unchanged.
