Safety Zone Established for Underwater Survey Work in the Straits of Mackinac

The Coast Guard is creating a temporary safety zone in the Straits of Mackinac on Lake Michigan. From June 1 to July 31, 2026, all waters within 500 yards of two survey vessels, the Ugle Duckling and Streak, will be restricted. The zone is in place while the vessels run underwater survey equipment, including a remotely operated vehicle, to map the lakebed.

Why it matters: This is a routine maritime safety measure. The underwater equipment and control boats have limited maneuverability and create underwater hazards that could endanger other vessels. The zone simply keeps recreational boaters, commercial traffic, and researchers at a safe distance while the survey work is underway. It does not change long-term shipping routes or restrict public access to the waterway outside the 500-yard radius.
